Capoeira Instructor
Although Michael is originally from Dominique, (FWI) his encounter began in 1994 as a student at Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS. As a student of Mestre Geraldo Carvalho –“Axe Brazil Academy of Capoeira” himself a student of renowned Grand-Mestre E. Bogado -“Baravento Group”, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil he trained “religiously” and gracefully blossomed in Capoeira simultaneously as he pursued his academic degree. Under their guidance Michael successfully graduated numerous levels and forged a life long passion for the sport.
Throughout this adventure Michael’s experience is of both as an ambassador and student of Capoeira. He has participated in numerous workshops, demonstrations, competitions and graduations (batizados). Michael has traveled much within the USA & Canada and trained with numerous foreign Mestres and groups. Currently as a Graduated Instructor accredited by the Brazilian Federation of Capoeira Michael is skilled in Capoeira’s numerous characteristics including fighting styles (Capoeira Regional & Angola), technique, music, acrobatics, folklore and rituals.
In addition, Michael is also affiliated in the Greater Toronto Region with many local groups. As an existing student of Grand-Mestre Derli -“Groupo Allianca Ariri”, Contra-Mestre Azeitona -“Groupo Dende de Recife” he continues to increase both physical and mental skills. To further compliment, Michael has taught Capoeira as a life skill and form of self-defense at numerous community centers including St Albans Boys & Girls Club and Harbourfront Community Center.
Currently a resident of Durham Region Michael is thrilled to be a pioneer of this exotic sport to this community. Interestingly, Capoeira serves as a refreshing complement to any sport and can be learned by anyone regardless of physical ability.
“It was very easy to get started and now it’s impossible to stop!” Michael says.
Michael hopes to share his passion for Capoeira with as many students as possible and hopes one day they will feel the same about this amazing art form.
